The Sisters of St. Dominic of Mission San Jose began their service at the request of Archbishop Joseph Sadoc Alemany.  In 1876, three sisters led by Mother Pia Backes traveled from Brooklyn to San Francisco to teach the children of German speaking Catholics at St. Boniface Parish on Tyler Street (now Golden Gate Avenue).

By 1883, a convent and school had been built at 1212 Guerrero Street.  That school was replaced by the present Immaculate Conception Academy designed by architect Alfred I. Coffey and built by  Barrett and Hilp in 1928.  The convent was replaced in 1960 by the present structure designed and built by Reardon Construction.

The 1883 convent chapel stained glass windows were salvaged and reinstalled as the twelve windows in the nave of the new chapel.  Those stained glass windows were created by Emil Frei Art Glass of Saint Louis Missouri.

A new rose window was created for the chapel by Carl Huneke, Century Stained Glass Studio, San Francisco.  Mr. Huneke also did the restoration and reinstallation of the 1883 stained glass windows.
