Saint Sebastian the Martyr was established as a parish in 1951 to serve the growing population of Greenbrae.  Parishioners met in Marin Catholic High School until the church building was completed in 1955.  The church was designed by architects Ryan and Lee of San Francisco.

The beautiful stained glass windows were designed and installed in 1958 by Carl Huneke, Century Stained Glass Studio, San Francisco.  The theme of the windows includes the Apostles, the Evangelists and saints of special significance to the donors of the windows.  The design of the windows is in the style of Gothic cathedrals of the fourteenth century.

The interior of the church was rearranged in 1967 with the altar centered in the east wall of the nave, and two of the windows, St. Philip and St. James were moved from their original location to the south wall to allow an appropriate background for the altar.

The baseball field at Marin Catholic High School has presented problems for the exterior of the church and for the windows.  Additional land was purchased between the school and the church, and a fence was erected in 1957.  In 1997, Lexan was installed to protect the windows.

The church was repainted, some relandscaping was completed, and new electronic carillon bells were installed in 1997.

The parishioners of St. Sebastian’s remain as committed and involved today, as they were at the founding of their parish almost fifty years ago.
